iCal Tutorial: Time Events
iCal can define calendars to test for event time overlapping.
When defined, conflicting time events can not be entered for the same day
on the calendar. This option can be set on the General Settings of
Calendar Configuration.
The best example for using this feature is when a calendar represents a conference
room. You would not want to reserve the room for two
overlapping meetings.
Searching and locating a free time slot is often a desired feature for calendars that
restrict overlapping time events. iCal provides such a searching mechanism
in a rather powerful way.
The best way to describe this is to continue with our example of conference
rooms. Imagine you have 5 conference rooms and that you have created
a calendar for each of these rooms. iCal will allow you to
search these 5 rooms to locate the free time slot that you require.
When viewing a calendar that does not allow overlapping time events you
will see
an
addtional link
on the Add Events navigation bar. Clicking on
this link will bring up a search form that will allow you to select which
conference rooms
(calendars) should be searched. iCal will search through the calendars
you specify and will
return a list of links to available conference rooms. Clicking on a link will take you
directly to the event edit form of that calendar (conference
room) so you can add your entry.
